When to get assessed?
A running assessment is not just for people with a clear injury. It can also help if your training has stalled, your confidence has dropped, or you feel unsure about how to progress.
You might be fine for 3km but flare up whenever you try 5km. You may feel Achilles stiffness the morning after hills, shin tightness when you add speed work, or knee pain halfway through your long run.
Some runners are not in much pain, but they know something does not feel right. Others are training for an event and want to know how much they can safely keep doing.
It can also be confusing knowing what to change. Should you rest, keep running, change shoes, stretch more, strength train, alter your technique or reduce hills?
The goal of a running assessment is to make those decisions clearer.

There often isn’t one single cause. Running tolerance can be influenced by training load, recent changes in distance or speed, strength, recovery, footwear, hills, previous injury, sleep, stress and running technique.
The goal is to understand why it is happening, not just where it hurts.
What can affect your running tolerance?
Running issues are often linked to a mismatch between what your body is prepared for and what your current training is asking it to tolerate.
What may be contributing to your symptoms or training difficulty can include:
- A sudden increase in weekly distance, speed sessions or hill running
- Not enough recovery between harder sessions
- Reduced calf, quad, hamstring, glute or hip strength
- Reduced tendon, bone or muscle capacity after time off
- Previous injury affecting strength, confidence or running pattern
- Footwear, surface or route changes
- Technique factors such as overstriding, crossover, cadence changes or reduced push-off
This does not mean your running style is “wrong”. Many strong, pain-free runners have technique differences. We only look closely at gait when it is relevant to your symptoms, goals or recurring pattern.
What we assess
In your first session, we’ll look at what may be contributing to your symptoms, what your running currently demands, and what you want to get back to.
Your running assessment may include:
- Your running history, injury history and current goals
- Recent training changes, weekly distance, pace, hills and event timeline
- Movement assessment of the hip, knee, ankle, foot or spine
- Strength and control testing
- Calf, hamstring, quad and hip capacity testing where relevant
- Balance, hopping, landing or single-leg testing where appropriate
- Treadmill running gait review if it is useful for your situation
At Fitness Physio, we may also use tools such as force plates and hand-held dynamometry when they are useful for measuring strength, asymmetry or progress.
The goal is to give you a clear explanation and a plan, not just a list of things that look “tight” or “weak”.

Running gait analysis
Running gait analysis can be useful, but it should not be overcomplicated.
A gait review may look at:
- Cadence
- Stride length
- Foot strike position
- Overstriding
- Crossover
- Hip and knee control
- Push-off
- Trunk position
- Technique changes when fatigued
For some runners, a small gait change can reduce symptoms or improve comfort. For others, the bigger priority is strength, load management, recovery or a better return-to-run plan.
We do not try to force every runner into the same style. We look at whether your running pattern is relevant to your body, your goals and your current training load.

Load management is one of the most important parts of running assessment and rehab.
Your body usually adapts well when training changes are gradual. Problems are more likely when distance, speed, hills or frequency increase faster than your muscles, tendons, joints or bones can tolerate.
Your plan may look at:
- How many runs per week suit your current capacity
- Whether your easy runs are actually easy enough
- How to introduce speed, hills or longer runs
- Whether run-walk intervals are useful
- How strength training fits around running
- What to do if symptoms appear during or after a run
- How to progress toward an event without relying on guesswork
