Walking and Running Mechanics

Do you experience pain in your feet, ankles, knees, hips, or low back while walking or running?

This can be a result of altered biomechanics such as excessive collapsing of the arch of the foot, cross line walking or running, contralateral pelvic drop or inward drift of the knee.

These conditions can result in or are a product of weakness of the muscles of the low back, hips or legs. In order to get back to walking or running pain free it is important to address these weaknesses, but recent research suggests that this is not enough. If you do not address these altered mechanics there is a good chance that your pain will return once you get back into your regular walking or running program.

Through visual feedback and appropriate analysis walkers and runners can improve their biomechanics and get back to pain free exercise.

The way we do this at Fitness Physiotherapy is with the use of a treadmill and camera that feeds into a TV so you can see any mechanical faults and correct them while you are walking or running. This has proven to be extremely effective in helping people enjoy pain free walking and running.

So if you have an annoying pain in your low back, hip, knee, or ankle that just won’t go away or keeps coming back it may be a mechanical issue that we can effectively treat with the proper assessment and treatment.
